Rhythmic Arts Center NYC (RAC) & Nicholas Young is proud to support Africa Afia through the sponsorship of the programming of master Senegalese percussionist Ibrahima “Thioko” Diagne. This support makes it possible for Africa Afia to offer drumming and cultural education in New York City—and to keep the instruments themselves present, cared for, and visible.

Drums are not only tools of performance; they are living vessels of Senegalese history, rhythm, and community. By providing storage and display for these instruments, RAC helps ensure that they remain available for teaching, rehearsal, and public encounter. That practical support underwrites Thioko’s mission: to introduce NYC audiences to Sabar and related West African traditions, and to deepen understanding of Senegal and Africa through sound, craft, and gathering.

About AFRICA AFIA

Africa Afia is a cultural and educational initiative spearheaded by Thioko Diagne, the Senegalese sabar master also known as Ibrahima “Thiokho” Diagne. Born in Dakar in 1974 and raised in a family steeped in music and art, Thioko built his first drums from goat skins and buckets as a child and later trained with master sabar drummers including M’Baye Faye and Lamine Faye.

His career has carried that tradition from Le Ballet National du Sénégal to stages across Africa, Europe, Asia, the Caribbean, and the United States—among them DanceAfrica at the Brooklyn Academy of Music—and into collaborations with Angélique Kidjo (including her album Õÿö), Baaba Maal, Stevie Wonder, Lady Gaga, Alicia Keys, Ziggy Marley, and others.

Africa Afia is the New York home of that work. It is a program of teaching, performance, and cultural presence: sabar drumming classes, drum-and-dance presentations, and the care and display of the instruments that make the tradition audible. The aim is straightforward and ambitious—to educate New Yorkers about Senegalese music and Africa by putting rhythm, craft, and community in the same room.

Ibrahima “Thiokho” Diagne is a master Sabar and West African percussionist from Dakar, Senegal, whose international career has included performances and collaborations with Grammy Award-winning Angélique Kidjo, Baaba Maal, Stevie Wonder, Lady Gaga, Alicia Keys, Ziggy Marley, Souleman Faye, Alioune Kasse, Zall Seck, Mependa Seck, Makhou Lebou, Solo Cissoko, and Kisito Band, among others. His performance credits include *DanceAfrica at BAM (Brooklyn Academy of Music), Le Ballet National du Sénégal, and stages throughout Africa, Europe, Asia, South America, the Caribbean, and the United States. He is also a credited percussionist on Angélique Kidjo’s acclaimed 2010 album, *Õÿö.

Born in Dakar in 1974, Thiokho is a member of the Bambara ethnic group, originating from Mali, West Africa. Music and art are a rich tradition in his family, and from an early age he dedicated himself to rhythm and percussion, making his own drums from discarded goat skins and buckets.

At age 15, Thiokho began studying with master Sabar drummers M’Baye Faye and Lamine Faye, who introduced him to Senegal’s professional music culture. He went on to tour throughout West Africa and, in 1997, founded his own percussion group, *The New Generation: Gewel Gi Seck. In 1999, he joined Le Ballet National du Sénégal, touring internationally. Thiokho later became a percussionist and backing vocalist for Angélique Kidjo*, touring extensively around the world.

A dedicated teacher as well as performer, Thiokho shares the rhythms, techniques, songs, and musical traditions of Senegal and West Africa with students and communities internationally. Since February 2026, Rhythmic Arts Center NYC (RAC) has been proud to host Thiokho’s ongoing Sabar drumming class, creating a home in East Harlem for the continued practice, transmission, and celebration of this rich rhythmic tradition.

Ousmane Sall is a Senegalese master of dance, choreography, and drum—an artist raised inside the tradition and then trained to carry it onto national and international stages. Born in Senegal to a family of drummers and dancers, he received formal training at the National Dance Academy and developed fluency in the country’s major styles. He is especially known for Kutiro, the celebratory, high-voltage dances of southern Senegal’s Casamance region, and for Sabar, whose shifting weight, speed, and conversation with the drum demand both musicality and nerve.

His professional life in Senegal included years with National Ballet Senemew, the country’s second national dance company, and with Silimbo D’Adeane. After relocating to New York, Sall became a familiar presence on some of the city’s most visible stages: the United Nations, Carnegie Hall, Lincoln Center, Alice Tully Hall, Symphony Space, Florence Gould Hall, the Museum of Jewish Heritage, Town Hall, Lincoln Center’s SummerStage, and Damrosch Park. He performed with Sing Sing Rhythms and Maimouna Keita Dance Company before founding YAKAR Roots and Rhythms African Drum and Dance Ensemble, which has appeared at events including ZEYBRAH’s Moment in Time Festival at the Schomburg Center.

Beyond the concert stage, Sall appeared in Tears of the Sun and contributed percussion to Hasidic New Wave’s album From the Belly of Abraham. Teaching has been a constant: years at Fareta and Djoniba in New York, workshops in schools, festivals, and clubs across the United States, and, into 2025–2026, weekly Sabar and Kutiro classes with live musicians at Cumbe. As a teacher he is known for warmth that puts beginners at ease and for the exacting joy he asks of advanced dancers—inviting every student, whatever their age, to meet the rhythm rather than merely copy steps.

In 2026, Sall continues the work that has defined his career: keeping Senegalese drum and dance alive as a living practice—on stage, in the studio, and in community.
